What do you consider to be the darkest piece of music you’ve ever heard?
I would say, Country Death Song by Violent Femmes. The song retells the story of a farmer who kills his child because he couldn’t feed her.
How would you characterize your own music?
Anxiety in 4/4.
What are your musical aspirations?
My aspirations have always been simple. Since I was a sixteen, all I ever wanted to do was put out records and tour. I have been fortunate to have found an audience that has allowed me to do this for twenty-plus years.
What are your main musical inspirations?
Musically, I found inspiration in those who challenge the definition of music. Lyrically, I find inspiration in whatever turmoil is occupying my life.
What are your main goals in life?
To live free of depression and anxiety.
What motivates you to create?
This is a difficult one. My creative pursuits are more impulsive than anything else.
Are you more of an early bird or a night owl?
An absolute “night owl.” I LOATHE the morning.
Besides music, what other art forms would you like to explore?
The only thing that has ever interested me is writing. Fortunately, I am able to do that and regularly publish my work.
Which is the very first record that had a big impact on you?
Trout Mask Replica by Captain Beefheart & The Magic Band completely altered my perception of music.
What is the best decade for music?
A lot of the records that impacted me the most were from the 1980’s.
What do your future plans include?
To continue to tour, release records, and continue to enjoy my life with my wife and son.
