Modern Stars have released a new single and video from their forthcoming album Space Trips for the Masses. The band continue the exploration of their dark and moody, psychedelic shoegaze sound, and unfurl more of the album's narrative.
A syncopated and acerbic track Monkey Blues represents a point in their adventure when the central character is unsure whether what is around him is truth or the product of his mind. The video which comes with the song was inspired by the 1995 Terry Gilliam movie 12 Monkeys which is partially based on Chris Marker's 1962 French experimental short film La jetée. The film explores the subjectivity of memories and their impact on perceived notion. Numerous times in the movie, the main characters are discovered to have transformed or false memories.
In a line David Morse states: "I think, Dr. Railly, you have given your 'alarmists' a bad name. Surely there is very real and very convincing data that the planet cannot survive the excesses of the human race: proliferation of atomic devices, uncontrolled breeding habits, the rape of the environment, the pollution of land, sea, and air. In this context, isn't it obvious that 'Chicken Little' represents the sane vision and that Homo Sapiens' motto, 'Let's go shopping!' is the cry of the true lunatic?"
