Nothing in my Purse (Secret Sign Remix) by Twin Rains

Darkenin Heart

Twin Rains is the dreampop project of Jay Merrow and Christine Stoesser. From their latest album Unreal City, the band reveal a new video and single of their song Nothing in my Purse, remixed by Toronto band Secret Sign of which Christine is also a member.

Secret Sign's Phil Baljeu, a celebrated Toronto video artist and longtime friend and collaborator of Twin Rains, created the remix and video. The artist comments on the video: “I wanted to create a series of slowly moving painterly portraits.I used modified vintage 35mm lenses to achieve a dreamy, cinematic effect. I’m very interested in the portrait format of vertical video, and the compositions it can contain that a horizontal frame cannot. The advent of smartphones has made this a more common format to explore.”

The song is remixed in a melancholic industrial shoegaze fashion, and it outlines topics such as death and ownership.

“Nothing in my Purse is about the paradox of possession, in the context of death,” says Christine. “My purse, my street, my grandparent… even “my” language implies ownership of people, ideas, objects…but the last time I lost someone to the gravitas of death, I had this realization that they never belonged to me at all.”
