Maurice Business Fills The Darkenin Heart Questionnaire
September 20, 2023
What do you consider to be the darkest piece of music you’ve ever heard?
Pretty good question to start with I’m not going to lie. I'd say Mayhems music is pretty dark, but it's more the surrounding factors, like taking a photo of your dead band member and making it the album cover. But I'm going to go with something that I’ve loved for ages, Perfume Genius - Hood, the whole album is beautiful but pretty damn sad, helped me through some pretty tough times, never cried so much at a gig, 10/10 highly recommend.
How would you characterize your own music?
Autotune junkyard music with curiosity into darkwave, EBM & big snares.
What are your musical aspirations?
Music has always been a type of therapy for me, I’d feel very lost without it, I’ve loved playing instruments since I was a kid and to be honest I don’t get a bigger high than after I’ve written a song I love. Ideally be able to write music nonstop, tour, sell records... etc, like a well lubricated machine.
What are your main musical inspirations?
I loved playing guitar ever since I was a kid and knew that I wanted a career in music. My dad was an amazing Spanish guitar player, I was very fortunate to have such a creative and supportive father to inspire me to pursue music. I drew inspiration from this project from artists such as Buzz Kull, Boy Harsher, Lebanon Hanover and more old school artists such as New Order, Martin Dupont etc.
What are your main goals in life?
To be fulfilled and earn a living by doing something I’m passionate for till the day I die.
What motivates you to create?
Absolutely sending it on a jetski, It’s where I get my best ideas.
Are you more of an early bird or a night owl?
Definitely night owl, I’ve tried to be a morning person but I think at this rate it should be time to accept that I'm just not built for it.
Besides music, what other art forms would you like to explore?
I work in the film industry as a sound recordist as my side hustle, I guess its not the most creative job, but I enjoy it, its nice sometimes to do something pretty different, allows me to switch my brain of music for a while. The majority of my mates are artists, so I guess would be nice to give that a bash at some point. But if I could be re incarnated I would want to be a top dog detective suited and booted.
Which is the very first record that had a big impact on you?
I’d probably have to say 30 Seconds To Mars, I remember watching one of their music videos as a kid and It inspired me to learn to play guitar. As I kid I had played various instruments on and off, but I stuck with playing guitar and I’m very grateful that I didn’t stop.
What is the best decade for music?
I’d have to be that guy and say the 80’s, sorry in advance, for me it was the golden age of pop music as well, big synths, drum machines, anthems, juiciness, boom.
What do your future plans include?
I think the next step would be to record an EP, with release for sometime next year, would love to tour too. Saying all this though I have started a new project with similar style of songwriting but as a 5-piece band, so I’m looking forward to getting that off the ground. As much as a I enjoy this project, I do miss playing as a full band, I’m planning to move out of London in the next few years and hopefully move to Barcelona too.
