Sycophants by Mourning Candle
July 23, 2025
Darkwave duo Mourning Candle have unveiled their second single and music video, Sycophants, a hypnotic track steeped in classic darkwave tones, perfect for a moody night on the dancefloor. The release follows their brooding debut Never, which came out earlier this year, and continues their sonic trip into shadowy sounds.
Featuring vocalist and lyricist Leslie Irene Benson and guitarist/synth programmer/songwriter Anson Taylor, Mourning Candle creates a seamless blend of haunting melodies and pulsating beats.
Sycophants explores the unfiltered toxicity that can lurk beneath the surface of nightclub scenes. The song was inspired by a true story penned by Benson during her college years as a poetry major in Dayton, Ohio. Drawing from her short story The Divine and the Demonic, the track invites listeners to rise above the fakeness and find solace in authentic connections.
Speaking of liberation, vulnerability, and strength, the song touches on the damaging loop of superficial friendships, while themes of resilience and belonging also stand out, ultimately celebrating self-discovery and the courage to find one’s tribe.
Set in the immersive world of a 1470's-themed goth club in Ohio circa 2002, the song's story follows Benson’s character as she surrenders to the rhythm of the night. Surrounded by an eclectic crowd and enveloped by the club’s intoxicating energy, she lets go of fear and inhibition, eventually finding warmth and intimacy with a stranger amidst the chaos.
