Tragic Lover by Bizou Spotlights the Shape of Darkenin Heart

Darkenin Heart

Bizou went all in with their first full-length, Tragic Lover in 2021, a record that feels like being pulled into a dreamlike state, immersive and incredible.

From the very first track, Days of Honey, the album bursts forward with a pulsing, electro-goth energy in the best possible way. It sets the stage for what’s to come, a journey through post-punk moodiness, shimmering, reverberating guitars, layers of shifting synths, and beats alive with darkwave urgency.

The title track, Tragic Lover, is where the band flexes its versatility, spinning the listener into a swirling indie psychedelic haze. Songs like Orphan Lights spill over with a mystifying unease, while the closer, Fascination, suspends between the celestial and the shadowy as a haunting farewell.

It may be a brief album, but it certainly doesn't lack anything, especially standout moments. Tragic Lover is proof that Bizou are capable of putting together moods of melancholy and longing with sparks of hope and bursts of kinetic energy. Sometimes danceable, often loaded with rock’s backbone, the album leans into a mix of post punk, shoegaze, and synthpop, always balancing its darker tones with unexpectedly inviting volatility.

Part of what makes the record shine is the pedigree behind it. With members who’ve lent their artistry to projects like Smashing Pumpkins, Wax Idols, Glaare, Veruca Salt, and Light FM, there’s both mastery and imagination at play. The result is music that feels lived in and is emotionally charged.
