Andlitin í Berginu is the second single from Gísli Gunnarsson’s forthcoming album Úr Öskunni, a deeply personal work shaped by the artist’s displacement following the volcanic eruptions near Grindavík, Iceland.
Translating to 'The Faces in the Rock,' the track pays homage to the spirits and stone formations swallowed by the upheaval. It’s a sonic elegy to a lost home, a landscape transformed, and the emotional toll of evacuation.
The music's weightiness, its grief, memory and resilience, echo through the composition, which combines together ambient textures, shoegaze, and post rock elements.
Gunnarsson comments: “Like a lot of Icelanders, I’ve always loved spotting trolls in the lava fields, seeing shapes in the rocks that feel like old spirits watching over the land. There were two on Þorbjörn, near Grindavík, that I was really attached to. I called them the king and the servant. They felt like guardians in a way. But during the earthquakes, they came down the mountain. It honestly felt like I’d lost something sacred. So I wrote “Andlitin í Berginu” from their perspective, like their final thoughts, their voices echoing through the rock.”
Úr Öskunni arrives November 7th, 2025 via By Norse Music.
