Chalice Sect Fill The Darkenin Heart Questionnaire
October 08, 2025
What do you consider to be the darkest piece of music you’ve ever heard?
That's a hard question. Probably some obscure black metal band from, like, Northern or Eastern Europe. It's not the darkest, but I love the dark feel of Gehenna’s “The Shivering Voice of the Ghost.” I also love the beauty and dark epic feel of Emperor's “Inno a Satana.” That's a favorite of mine in general.
Check those out if, in the rare case, you're not familiar with those.
How would you characterize your own music?
That's hard to say. I think I pull from all sorts of places musically. A lot of this music is inspired by new wave bands from the 80s.
So I think I'd call it some sort of blend of darkwave, post-punk, dark electro, and maybe even dark synth. But at times I'm not sure where it fits, to be honest. I think the listener would be best to categorize it. Eye of the beholder.
What are your musical aspirations?
Honestly and realistically, I think just to have a creative outlet. Like any musician/artist, the dream is to make an actual living from your art. But we all know how difficult that is.
What are your main musical inspirations?
My biggest inspirations are Sepultura, The Prodigy, and Behemoth.
I grew up watching/listening to 80s bands as a young child. My earliest memories of songs I liked were from The Cure, Adam Ant, and even George Clinton. I was primarily a metalhead later in life. I loved European metal bands, like obscure Eastern black metal bands. The 00s were me listening to lesser-known pagan, black, and folk metal bands from Europe. I never cared for the metalcore/deathcore stuff that was happening in the States.
What are your main goals in life?
To be happy. It's subjective, yes, but that can include anything from traveling more to owning a house with a nice fancy pool. I think sometimes I create music out of boredom, but I'm sure that's not true.
What motivates you to create?
Boredom? Lol. I'm not sure. I think it's just part of who I am. It's integrated into my being. Most of my writing comes from nowhere at any random moment.
Are you more of an early bird or a night owl?
An early bird. I hate being up late. It was no problem when I was younger, but now I can't sleep in. I'm always up early. So what's the point of being out late if you're just going to be tired and feel like shit the next day. I don't really nap.
On the weekends, it would be nice if shows didn't start later than 5pm. Think about it, the show would end early enough to either do something else after or go home at a reasonable hour. :)
Besides music, what other art forms would you like to explore?
Hmm, I don't know. If I had a lot of extra free time, I'd probably use that time to learn a trade or skill like scuba diving or learning how to fix cars.
Which is the very first record that had a big impact on you?
Ooh, that's a hard question. As a child maybe Adam Ant’s “Goody Two Shoes.” As an adolescent, maybe Dr. Dre’s The Chronic or KMFDM’s Drug Against War.
What is the best decade for music?
Not a true decade, but the late 70s/early 80s was a magical time. There will never be a time like that again. So many new things were happening. New instruments and technology led to new types of music and experimentation.
What do your future plans include?
Releasing more music. I have, like, 8 more songs that just need some vocals on them. But I'm not sure if they're really representative of the sound I'm going for anymore. Most of these Chalice Sect songs were written like 2 years to 1 ½ years ago.
I want to incorporate the energy of metal into my music more. Or the vibe, maybe. Not necessarily the music but the feel. So I'm trying to figure out how to do that more without being overly heavy.
I want this music to be more cathartic.
That and playing some quality shows, hopefully.
