When the Julies returned in 2023 with Always & Always, their anticipated full length and first release in over twenty years, it appeared closer to an unfinished matter than a reunion of sorts. In addition with each subsequent single, The Julies have demonstrated an affinity for combining the momentous nature of their initial releases with an enhanced sense of intent.
Summermouth is the band's latest release, a lush, nostalgic mix of post punk and pop components that encapsulates the band's ability to create sounds that are both buoyant and haunting.
“We were pretty much weaned on those happy/sad songs that tricked you into dancing, but with tears in your eyes,” says singer Chris Newkirk. “And that’s what ‘Summermouth’ does. To me at least.”
The Julies’ Summermouth marks a turning point. It's a comeback charged with drive and drenched in the emotive haze of dreampop while the band's sound feels lived-in, melodic, and exceptionally affectionate.
