Third Culture Kids by Second Idol

Darkenin Heart

Australian four-piece Second Idol deliver Third Culture Kids, the urgent new single taken from their forthcoming album Mongrel, out soon via Gloomshift Records.

The track is a post punk statement that thrives on immediacy. Its sharp lyricism and commanding band performance channel the ethos of the record as a whole. Third Culture Kids is a declaration of identity and ideology..

Mongrel is expected to be an album of our times, delving into themes of feminism, gender, postcolonialism, multiculturalism, imposter syndrome, and heartbreak. It consolidates Second Idol’s sonic identity while reinforcing their values, offering a conduit through which the band can proudly articulate everything for which they stand.

Second Idol themselves embody the multiplicity they sing about. Formed by second-generation Australians; Kate (Sri Lankan/Scottish), Sunny Josan (Palestinian/Indian), and Afeef Iqbal (Pakistani), the band’s very makeup reflects the layered cultural intersections that inform their art.

On the album's crowdfunding vinyl campaign, Kate explains: “Running the crowdfunding campaign to help us press the record to vinyl was equally a nerve-wracking and an elating experience. There’s always that sense of self-doubt that arises that people don’t really care for your art, or that you don’t have an audience.”

Mongrel was produced, mixed and mastered by Clayton Segelov, with engineering by Angie Watson, all at The Brain Studios in Sydney.
