Ulrika Spacek are a British experimental rock band from London, celebrated for their collision of gritty guitar textures and atmospheric sounds. Their new single Picto signals a bright and curious new chapter, marking the very first song written for their forthcoming fourth album, EXPO. Born from the excitement of fresh creative approaches, the track sits in the sweet spot between psychedelia and shoegaze, capturing the band in a distinctly exploratory headspace.
The band explain: “There is no better way to describe the process other than fun. It felt great to be working as a collective again and ultimately the music we were making felt fresh and to quote the lyrics ‘in new terrain’. The outro features Rhys’ voice turned into a female voice using AI. There was a lot of optimism about what music we would make after working on this song and lyrically it celebrates making art as a collective as opposed to constant individual expression.”
Picto is accompanied by a dentist-themed music video directed by Katya Ganfeld, pairing the track’s hazy intensity with a concept rooted in restiveness.
They add: “The origin of this video began with the cruel dilemma of having an upcoming dental appointment when you’re phobic of going to the dentist. Sonically it firstly made sense to do something in darkness or the night but we tried to flip that and thought medical white light could be equally unsettling. They say you have to confront your fears in order to disarm them and in this case that involved buying multiple dentistry text books with the view of scanning them and including them in the video. This took a little bit more time than first thought as it was kinda impossible to open these books until the real life appointment had taken place.”
