The Antagonist by Avfall

Darkenin Heart

Back in 2016, Avfall's Daniel and Joel set strict rules for themselves, to meet every Wednesday, write and record a song that night, and release it without overthinking. That experiment became their 2017 cassette album, Mental Preparation. When they reconnected years later, the approach changed. There were no fixed deadlines, no creative constraints. That openness shaped Weltschmerz.

Following last year’s release of Weltschmerz, Avfall return with a two-track single that feels personal in a different way, sounding direct, stripped back, and emotionally exposed.

The completely new The Antagonist leans into their colder instincts and Le Bleu de Février takes a different path. Originally appearing on their debut, the song is reworked in French and rebuilt with heavier EBM textures. The new version feels darker and more physical, with a pulse that digs deeper. At the same time, there’s something reflective about revisiting older material, seeing it from a different angle.

The new release sits somewhere between Avfall's two chapters. It carries the focus of their early days, but also has the artistic perspective they’ve gained since.
