Perennial compress an excessive amount of energy into two exciting minutes on Ready! Steady! Go!, the latest preview of their forthcoming album, Modernism. The New England trio may be celebrated for their ferocious punk sound, but here they allow their sharp edges to stand out with pop vitality and psychedelic colours.
Vibraphone, electric organ and fuzz bass summon the exuberance of mid-to-late-sixties Motown, while Chad Jewett and Chelsey Hahn trade vocal bursts across the song’s tightly wound groove. It may be both the band’s most pop-facing and most psychedelic track to date.
The upcoming Modernism is a ten-song rush where freakbeat, soul, dance punk and studio experimentation are forced into compact, explosive forms. Produced by longtime collaborator Chris Teti, the album finds Perennial treating the recording process as another instrument, stacking vintage hooks against feedback, Mellotron loops and rhythmic agitation.
