The spirit of an underground film provided the initial spark for Druidess, a strong track from the new album Frown Time by Normal Weirds, but the band allows the disturbing imagery and oppressive mood to mutate into something entirely their own.
Gloom gathers around the guitars while the performance maintains the abrasion and nervous momentum of a punk band playing without restraint.
The track brings the more expansive side of Frown Time into view, pushing the East Bay quartet deeper into deathrock and deathpunk without abandoning the anarcho-punk base beneath their music. Their refusal to settle within one punk tradition gives the track a lot of substance. It is atmospheric and somewhat theatrical in scale yet super rough at its core.
Frown Time has just been released.
