According to the artist himself, songs don't come easily to Kevin Gibbard while Black Doldrums are touring. Echoes proved the exception, arriving almost fully formed in the back of a van during the band’s visit to Belgrade. Encounters with the city, its history and its creative spirit gave the track its lyrical direction and a lasting emotional significance.
Gibbard says: “This track was finally completed while touring and playing a show in Belgrade, Serbia, where the city’s warmth, creativity and discussions about local history inspired the song’s lyrics. Our time spent there won’t be forgotten. It’s one of those special moments and opportunities you wouldn’t have got if we weren’t in a band. I’ve never written a song whilst on tour before. Realistically, it never happens, but this one came out in one go, sat in the van.”
Named after the psychological concept associated with Freud, the anticipated Repetition Compulsion album examines why people continually return to familiar wounds, inherited cycles and damaging modes of behaviour. The fourth advance track from the record, Echoes precedes its November 13th, 2026 release through Fuzz Club.
