The five members of the Cologne-based band Smile met in Bonn after crossing into each other at the same concerts and realizing that their musical interests and tastes overlapped. The band have released their debut EP I hate it here, introducing listeners to their composite sound, together with a music video for the song Foliage, shot on super 8 film.
Foliage commences with a sense of confusion, yet the song builds into something moving, built on an intensive rhythm section mingled with spoken word poetry, and an overall jazzy tone.
Smile are Rubee Fegan (vocals), Lars Fritzsche (guitar), Sebastian Lessel (guitar, synth), Max Schmidt (bass) and Marius Szarnych (drums).
