Windy City Dreams by Unwed Sailor

Darkenin Heart

Unwed Sailor's new album Mute the Charm will be released on Spartan Records on February 10th, 2023. Windy City Dreams, the album's first track, is an ample, Roxy Music-inspired track about Johnathon Ford's big but unfulfilled dreams of moving to Chicago in the late nineties/early 2000s.

Ford, who has previously been a member of both Roadside Monument and Pedro the Lion, describes the new album as a return to basics. “Mute The Charm is a back to the basics, primal record,” he says. “It’s instrumental music without all the dressings. Muting the Charm, digging in the dirt, swimming in the ocean, going back to the basics, feeling those primal feelings of nature, and reflecting those feelings in songs.”

With the new tracks lifting influence from bands like Seam, The Sundays, and the instrumentation of Joy Division, the new direction of Unwed Sailor seems more direct than ever.

“I want to transcend the barrier that being an instrumental band with no vocals can sometimes bring between the artist and the listener,” says Ford. “When I sit down to write a song, I’m not writing a post-rock song, I’m writing a pop song. I’m singing through my bass lines. The bass is my voice and the notes are my lyrics. I love how bands like Tycho and El Ten Eleven have created their own voices through instrumental music that appeals to all listeners, not just post rock or instrumental music fans.”
