Used To Be by The Know
December 01, 2022
The Know started in late 2018 when Daniel Knowles recommended to his wife, Jennifer Farmer, that rather than traveling home for the holidays (to the UK and Texas, respectively), the LA transplants stay in place and create music together. Isolating themselves in their home studio, the duo relied on their common love for shoegaze, dreampop and sixties pop, and created their first material that made up their well received debut wearetheknow.
The band is preparing to release their second EP, which was completed during the pandemic and in a time of severe isolation. The EP was produced by Farmer and Knowles and mostly recorded in their home studio in a short period of time.
The lead single, Used to Be, delves into the difficulties of romantic relationships, particularly as they were intensified during the pandemic. It's an atmospheric and very melodic song, built on hazy guitars and beautiful production. Farmer directed and created the accompanying cinematic music video, which depicts a troubled relationship's ups and downs in a non-linear way.
Knowles reveals, “Then of course the pandemic hit, people all around us were having their relationships tested in lockdown with significant others, some relationships came out stronger, some didn’t survive. And on a more universal scale lots of people worldwide were dealing with a loss of normality, loss of connection with other people, suddenly not being able to do simple things like buy groceries, things we’d all taken for granted.”
