Eric Angelo Bessel Fills The Darkenin Heart Questionnaire

Darkenin Heart

What do you consider to be the darkest piece of music you’ve ever heard?
I’m going way back, here – the album, Cursed Be The Deceiver from 90s metalcore group Deadeyesunder. It’s bleak, chaotic, and massively haunted.

How would you characterize your own music?
It’s where ambient, gothic, and psychedelic motifs converge.

What are your musical aspirations?
For the music to sustain itself and to never feel the need to make creative concessions because of anything.

What are your main musical inspirations?
I’m really enjoying the 70s releases from Egyptian and Lebanese record labels, Soutelphan, Cairophon, and Chahine & Fils. There are literally hundreds of records to discover and everything about their instrumentation inspires me.

What are your main goals in life?
Health, love, travel, rest, music. Repeat.

What motivates you to create?
Creation itself motivates me, it’s a very pure source of energy. Almost as if something is flowing through me, making me move, and I get swept along with it.

Are you more of an early bird or a night owl?
Most days I’m an early bird. I wake up at 5 or 6 in the morning, and I’m ready to go. Once in a while I’ll stay up late working on something, usually because I’ve lost track of time.

Besides music, what other art forms would you like to explore?
I’m also a visual artist; I’ve been photographing with medium format film cameras for more than two decades.

Which is the very first record that had a big impact on you?
I remember buying Michael Jackson’s album, Dangerous, on cassette when it came out. I was about 10 or 11 years old at the time. I burned through so many batteries on my Walkman listening to that tape.

What is the best decade for music?
Right now. You can look back on previous decades with hindsight and nostalgia but the present is really the most interesting time. It’s malleable, always changing, and constantly incorporating past musical movements in new ways.

What do your future plans include?
More albums, more collaborations, and touring.
