Plague X draws inspiration from the life cycle of cicadas, specifically the arrival of Brood X, a group of cicadas with a seventeen-year cycle that occurred in 2021. In a world on the road to recovery from the pandemic, experiencing a year of plague-like conditions is not unfamiliar. The coming of the Brood X cicadas is reminiscent of the plague of locusts described in the biblical book of Exodus.
