In 2019, Drab Majesty released their third album, Modern Mirror, which quickly became a major success within the underground post punk and synthpop scene. The album has since established itself as a modern day classic, showcasing the band's beautiful blend of sharp new wave sounds, gripping storytelling, and nonconformist aesthetics.
The album was written in Athens, Greece, where Deb Demure and Mona D lived for a while to find inspiration. Its concept is based on a modern reinterpretation of Ovid's archaic tale of Narcissus, with each track narrating a part of an enduring story. It was produced by Josh Eustis (Telefon Tel Aviv), mastered by Dave Cooley, featuring guest appearances from Jasamine White-Gluz (No Joy) and Justin Meldal-Johnson (NIN, Beck, M83, Air), and it came out through Dais Records.
The album displayed numerous signs of the band's songwriting brightness and produced several remarkable singles, each paired with stunning accompanying videos.
Modern Mirror stands as an accomplished piece of modern goth music, combining darkwave and synth influences while maintaining a distinct character of its own. It serves as a natural continuation of the eighties genres that shaped the sounds and aesthetics upon which much of today's underground music is built.
Drab Majesty's songs also use elements of shoegaze, giving their sound an atmospheric and dreamy essence. While the gothic rock aspect of their sound is noticeable on the album, it never dominates the music's entire tone. Considering the more psychedelic dreampop direction they explored in their later work, Modern Mirror stands as a pivotal moment in the band's evolution. It marks the point where Drab Majesty transitioned from their rawer synthpop beginnings through post punk influences, to creating something that clearly elevated their craft.
