Gone by Soft Set

Darkenin Heart

Toronto dreampop duo Soft Set has returned with a brand new single and video, the very melodic track Gone. Being the lead track and title song of their upcoming EP, which releases on November 15th, 2024, Gone reflects a notable shift in the musical direction of Soft Set. Mostly known for their introspective lyrics and moody sounds that often explore darker domains, the duo embraces a more uplifting tone in their new material.

The video for Gone, shot in Toronto, nearly didn't come to be after a last-minute cancellation on the day of filming. Quick improvisation by the band, along with the help of a kind stranger, allowed them to successfully complete the shoot.

Soft Set's Nathan Athay describes: "When we first planned the video for 'Gone', we had invited a friend to be in it, but they didn’t show up on the day of the shoot. I ended up walking into The Local pub on Roncesvalles, where I met Alandra McKirdy and explained the situation. Alandra graciously accepted our last-minute invitation to step in, and we are incredibly thankful for her involvement. Without her, the video might not have come together the way it did."

Nathan comments on the entire EP: “The one thing that really surprised us while making the Gone EP was how much lighter and more hopeful it ended up being. It started off really dark during the demo phase, but once we began layering in harmonies, it took on a more uplifting vibe, which we weren’t expecting. It was a nice surprise for us, and it made the entire process more interesting, for sure!”

Soft Set are James Gray and Nathan Athay, a band that mentions influence from incredible artists like The Stone Roses, The Smiths, My Bloody Valentine, RIDE, Slowdive, Happy Mondays, The Boo Radleys, and Mercury Rev.
