In Between marks a bold new chapter for Minsk trio Dlina Volny, the Belarusian connoisseurs of shadowy sounds. Released through the stylish Italians Do It Better label, this second full length finds the band leaning deeper into their darkwave and post punk roots, while confidently expanding their sonic panel.
Across the album’s run, Dlina Volny create a rich fabric of textured synth layers and brooding atmospheres. Early standouts included Never The Same, Flair, Dance Me Away, Bliss, Follow Me which arrived as singles earlier in the year, but there are additional highlights such as Midnight, Chant and Doppelgänger that make the album a cohesive listen as a whole. Heard together, they form part of a bigger vision that’s as suited for late-night sessions while they also belong in the dimness of the dance floor.
The sound here is haunting, as spectral vocals glide over drum machine beats, icy synth lines, and razor sharp guitars. Dlina Volny fuse post punk, synthpop, and darkwave with flashes of industrial and EBM, creating a freshly vital result.
The aesthetic is steeped in Eastern European new wave and burnished with Western electronic polish, with an undercurrent of 1980s Soviet imagery and stark brutalist geometry.
In Between feels like an immersive evolution for Dlina Volny. It's a work that balances depth, intimacy and scale. There’s a nocturnal quality to the record, a sense that it moves best under moonlight. Cold yet fascinating, it reveals a band with a clear, uncompromising vision.
