Spineless Wonders by Second Idol

Darkenin Heart

Spineless Wonders is the latest single from Sydney’s Second Idol, released via Gloomshift Records. A notably fierce creation, the track takes aim at the abuse of power and the lies that often accompany it, a theme to which the band returns with characteristic passion.

Second Idol brings a sharp alternative sound, shaped by precision as well as a rich medley of cultural and personal experience. The trio composed of Kate (Sri Lankan/Scottish), Sunny Josan (Palestinian/Indian), and Afeef Iqbal (Pakistani), features all second-generation Australians, and their backgrounds speak volumes. Their lived realities, spanning gender identities, sexualities, and diasporic heritage, inform the music and shape its character.

“’It began as a slinking and syncopated gothic instrumental,” singer and guitarist Kate Farquharson comments on the new single. “There was something sinister and sinuous about it. I began penning lyrics that twisted through the melody, alluding to power, control and corruption. Inherent to the song is a critique of the ‘Spineless Wonder’, which can be interpreted as a cowardly spectacle or the ill repute of individual cowardice. In this song, the people regarded as ‘spineless’ are politicians and individuals in exploitative positions of power. Here, the individual is void of consequence, and through corruption proceeds to ‘wander free’.
