The new Jupe Jupe single, Haunting, blends together melodic post punk and darkwave atmospherics, delivering a track that feels both remarkably approachable and impressively created. Veterans of the Seattle and Austin music scenes, Jupe Jupe has released eight acclaimed albums and EPs, steadily refining their distinctive sound.
For this new release, the band shared a detailed statement that captures the essence of the track better than anyone else could.
"The ghosts of relationships gone are something everyone wrestles with from time to time. There never seems to be any rhyme or reason as to when or why they’ll appear. Some of these phantoms float by peacefully, while others flap around the belfry with a bit more belligerence.
"To set the tone for Haunting, we let the monophonic rasp of the saxophone lead the synth strings to make the first statement. The sax is voice-like but not the voice and so not bound to words in the same way voices can be. Once we’re in the song, the image of memories, lingering like perfume, struck us as a gentle way of getting to the heart, through the sense of smell and taste. Haunting conveys the drama of realizing it’s not just others who have left a mark on us, as we have likely left marks on them too.
"The electronic arrangements include low-fi sample sequences inspired by bands like Boy Harsher and Twitch-era Ministry. We wanted bass and drums to drive the song relentlessly forward toward the sax solo at the end making a monophonic plea as if arriving just in time for the exorcism. The video was shot between a farm in eastern Washington and a building in Seattle known for paranormal activity."
Haunting is a somber and poetic contemplation on love as possession, expressing the struggle between longing and independence and displaying feelings of lust that feel like an affliction.
