Following a successful first EP, Philadelphia's genre-bending alternative quintet Soft No chose a new approach with their next set of tracks. Writing became more open to collaboration, and the band leaned into a faster, more immediate energy, culminating in a five-track album that represents a significant shift in their style.
“We did our due diligence to not overly critique these songs. We tapped into everyone’s tastes, and let the music come out naturally,” says lead guitarist and co-lead vocalist Austin Lotz. “Everybody is more present on this EP,” adds rhythm guitarist Scott Signorino.
Titled Super Neutral, the EP takes its name from a phrase coined by vocalist and bassist Allison Lannutti, inspired by navigating family gatherings during a politically tense time. The music, however, is anything but reserved, appearing direct, cathartic, and willing to take risks.
The single Probably Fine sits at the center of the release, built around a buoyant bassline, notable synth textures, and a blend of influences that nod to the band’s nineties roots while pushing forward.
“Something that’s different about this album, and this song in particular, is that I was focusing on how I perform live. The vocal delivery punches through the loud instruments. It’s a contrast to the more subdued, shoegaze-esque vocals I usually default to,” Lannutti reveals.
