Bronski Beat’s 1984 synthpop classic Smalltown Boy is reimagined by NYC’s London Plane with producer Carlos Dengler, formerly of Interpol. Subtitled A Refugee Song, this version broadens the original’s message to reflect the realities faced by displaced people worldwide amid ongoing conflict.
Smalltown Boy: A Refugee Song comes out of the recording sessions for London Plane’s forthcoming album Villains Heroes Ghosts, set for release in summer 2026.
The new version of the track carries a renewed sense of energy, pairing a more intimate, crooning vocal approach with vivid synth work and crisp, focused production. It is an essentially dark version that absolutely matches the framework of the classic track.
