Spike, the synthpop project of London musician and composer Hannah McLoughlin, presents Event Horizon, the latest preview of her self-titled debut album, out through Gob Nation Records.
A propulsive piece of dark synthpop, Event Horizon uses the boundary of a black hole, the point beyond which return becomes impossible, as a metaphor for falling deeply in love.
McLoughlin explains: “An Event Horizon is the edge of a black hole known as “the point of no return”. I used this to express how falling in love deeply can feel like a scary leap into the unknown. I made this song shortly after a night out dancing to drum and bass, so was in a breakbeat state of mind.”
That leap into the unknown is rendered through an insistent electronic pulse, sharp melodic hooks and breakbeat energy.
Spike belongs to the more eccentric lineage of British synthpop, mentioning the cold intimacy of Rose McDowall, Chris & Cosey and Fad Gadget as main influences. The artist draws from that tradition while displaying a strong instinct for songwriting, balancing leftfield electronic experimentation with melodies that remain direct and immediately memorable.
