Observation Room step into view with Running Lights, the first example from their upcoming debut. The project treats British synthpop like a mood they grew up inside, like something familiar, but warped by the realities queer and trans women face right now.
The song moves in a steady manner, sounding bright and a little unnerving. Each verse tightens the frame until the chorus suddenly opens up, bigger and more emotional than the track initially lets on. Beneath the glossy production lies a quiet dread, the kind that comes from trying to build connection and warmth on a planet that is becoming more confrontational.
What gives the track its sting is the simple contradiction of wanting to disappear and wanting to be recognized at the same time. The fear of being watched collides with the thrill of being noticed, and the song never fully resolves that tension.
Sharp and wired with nervous energy, Running Lights sets the tone for Observation Room’s debut album, arriving this September via à La Carte Records.
