Ancient Channels offer a final standout moment from their new album Static Spirit with Year Of The Rats, a bombastic collision of wild energy, fuzzed-out guitars and dreamlike vocals. The noise levels are pushed into the red, yet the band’s strong melodic instincts prevent the track from surrendering entirely to the storm.
The single charges forward as though Ancient Channels have opened every pressure valve at once. Drums tumble with barely contained force, guitars erupt into thick clouds of fuzz, and the whole track moves with a volatile urgency suited to its title.
Beneath the distortion lies a distinctly tender current. The vocals float through the wreckage, preserving a sense of melody and ethereal calm while everything around them threatens to collapse. As the fourth and final single from Static Spirit, the song distills the album’s central tension. Shoegaze softness set against noise-rock excess, each side intensifying the other.
